Milan, Guadalajara, Wuhan, Mezitli, New York City are the winners of the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. The 2018 edition was held in the framework of the Global Mayors’ Forum & 2018 International Seminar on learning from urban innovation. This award, co-sponsored by United Cities and Local Governments UCLG, Metropolis the Metropolitan section of UCLG and the city of Guangzhou, has become an international event that inspires participants to appreciate the importance of city-to-city learning and cooperation. On December 6, during the International Seminar on Learning from Urban Innovation, there was an opportunity to witness the joint efforts of cities around the world to build a better future, and the results were announced on December 7 during the award ceremony. In this way, Zhiying Chen, Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, addressed that “innovation is crucial for us, but also for future generations and Guangzhou is committed to continue supporting exchanges among cities around the world. We celebrate the success of our partnership with UCLG & Metropolis”. Co-hosted by UCLG, Metropolis, and Guangzhou Municipal Government, the Guangzhou Award aims to reward innovations to improve the socio-economic environments in cities and regions, promote sustainability, and hence advance the livelihood of their citizens. Presented biennially, the award will encourage and recognize outstanding innovative projects and practices in the public sector. Against the background of a rapidly changing social, economic and environmental context in the 21st century, the Guangzhou Award contributes to the progress of city performances by promoting innovations in the public sector and presenting a platform for cities and regions around the world to share and disseminate their achievements. The award is open to all cities and local governments, including members of Metropolis and UCLG as well as other cities. Applicants can submit innovative achievements in such thematic fields as Public Services, Organization and Administration, Partnership and Citizen Involvement, Smart City, Sustainable City, and others. The Guangzhou Award will be granted to up to 5 winners. Each of the winners will be awarded with USD 20,000, apart from a trophy and a certificate. It aims to recognize innovation in improving social, economic and environmental sustainability in cities and regions and, in so doing, to advance the prosperity and quality of life of their Guangzhou Award, presented biennially, is open to all cities and local governments with successful initiatives in urban innovation. The initiative that is entered for the Guangzhou Award should be an ongoing or recently completed within the past two years project, measure or policy that produces practical effect or substantial influence, boasting originality, exemplariness and assessment of each cycle’s Guangzhou Award is conducted by international experts independently. The Technical Committee selects up to 15 shortlisted cities and no more than 30 deserving cities from approved applications. From the shortlist, the Jury makes a final selection of up to five award winning cities.
